Jam Jar

jam_jar.jpgperfect reproduction of the 18th century Joseon ceramic work listed as National Treasure 93, this white porcelain jar exhibits iron designs of a lotus band encircling the neck and a monkey playing between grape vines painted on the upper part of the body. The lower part is left empty, creating a delightful contrast against the rich reddish brown design around the shoulder. The grapes symbolize one’s wish to have many children as grapes bear much fruit, while the monkey represents one’s hope to gain a high-ranking position in the government as the pronunciation of ‘monkey’ in Chinese characters is the same as ‘feudal lords.’ Iron-painted porcelain wares of Korea feature brisk brush strokes, powerful color contrasts, and a gracefully simple form, giving it an aloof dignity that differentiates it from Chinese and Japanese counterparts.

img_1201.jpg

Cambodia, the largest religious temple in the world and one of the seven wonders of the world. The sheer size of these ancient ruins of worship sheltered a succession of Khmer kings between the 9th and 15th century.

The temples are stunning for both their majesty and their intricacy, one is awed by both the scale and power of the structures from a distance and by their wonderfully detailed carvings upon a closer approach. One can only imagine the opulence of the city at its peak, believed to be grander than any contemporary city in Europe, a truly astonishing spectacle. We have a variety of sizes and types of Angkor Wat paintings, each piece displays traits of its own, nevertheless the 5 peaking towers of Angkor Wats largest and best-restored temple dominate each piece

Small Head of Javaraman VII

javaraman7.jpgInspired by the head of Jayavarman VII, from the Preah Khan temple of Kompong Svay (Bayon style, XIIth-XIIIth). The figure is rendered with simplicity and softness. Supreme King among the king, universal monarch, he is, however, neither ornamented nor distinguished as one in its position should be. Jayavarman shines with a retstrained force and meditative richness which is also what all people aspire to.
